KARNES COUNTY, Texas – Recently, two former employees of the Karnes County Correctional Detention Facility found themselves in serious trouble. They have been indicted on federal charges related to a drug smuggling operation within the facility, according to a statement from the U.S. Marshals Service.
The investigation began when agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) uncovered evidence that led them to arrest Joseph Adrian Padilla, 50, and Julian Esquivel, 20, just a week apart. The two men are facing serious charges that could have significant consequences.
According to the news release, both Padilla and Esquivel used their positions as correctional employees to smuggle drugs and other banned items into the facility, allegedly in exchange for money. This kind of behavior not only breaks the law but also puts everyone inside the detention center at risk.
U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Texas, Susan Pamerleau, emphasized the seriousness of introducing dangerous substances into a detention environment. “The introduction of dangerous drugs and contraband into a detention facility poses a serious threat to the safety and security of everyone inside,” she stated. She also expressed gratitude towards state and federal partners for their collaborative efforts in tackling this pressing issue.
As the investigation continues, the U.S. Marshals Service has indicated that more arrests could be on the horizon. This situation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining security and safety within correctional facilities.
