NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – A New Braunfels museum is celebrating America’s 250th birthday through the stories of historic American flags.

The exhibit, titled “Old Glory Stories,” features a variety of flags from the museum’s collection, highlighting how German immigrants embraced Independence Day traditions after founding New Braunfels in 1845. This celebration of history connects the past with the present, making it relevant and relatable to visitors of all ages.

Curator Keva Hoffmann Boardman shared that the community celebrated the Fourth of July during its very first year in Texas. This cherished tradition has continued, reflecting the deep-rooted values and pride within the community.

Among the standout pieces in the exhibit is a massive 45-star flag, which once graced the interior of the Seekatz Opera House. This flag serves as a testament to the evolving nature of the American flag as new states joined the Union, with the collection showcasing flags that represent seven different configurations of stars.

In addition to the historical flags, some pieces carry more personal narratives. One poignant flag was draped over the coffin of a World War I veteran, with the exhibit sharing his story alongside the flag. This connection to individual lives adds a deeper layer of meaning to the display, encouraging visitors to reflect on the sacrifices made throughout history.

The “Old Glory Stories” display opened prior to July 4 and is expected to remain on view until around Christmas. This extended timeframe allows for more community members and visitors to experience the rich history encapsulated in the flags.

The museum, which traces its roots back to 1933, is dedicated to telling the comprehensive story of New Braunfels and Comal County, focusing on the community’s founding and development. Boardman hopes that visitors leave inspired to delve deeper into their own histories, emphasizing the importance of understanding and taking pride in one’s heritage.

“You should know your history,” she stated. “And be proud of it.” This message resonates strongly, especially as America prepares to celebrate its milestone anniversary.
