SAN ANTONIO – The Cornerstone Warriors volleyball team is making waves in the world of high school athletics. Currently ranked No. 3 in the nation by MaxPreps, the Warriors have become a force to be reckoned with this season.
In a significant move to bolster their team, Cornerstone welcomed former O’Connor High School standout and two-time NCAA volleyball national champion coach Dominique Gonzalez-Tomlin. Coach Gonzalez-Tomlin, affectionately known as Coach “Dom,” brings a wealth of experience and success to the Warriors, having clinched her championships at Penn State University.
After graduating from O’Connor in 2011, where she excelled as a libero, Gonzalez-Tomlin’s journey through collegiate volleyball has equipped her with invaluable insights that she now imparts to her players. “This is what’s going to help you be successful,” she emphasizes. “Showing up on time, being disciplined, and working hard—even when you don’t feel like it—are crucial habits to cultivate.”
Mike Carter, the head volleyball coach at Cornerstone, highlights the importance of Gonzalez-Tomlin’s experience. “The experience of having coached at a high level, in college and winning two national championships as a player, is something I can’t bring to the table. She has the unique ability to share that knowledge with the girls,” he stated.
Carter’s history with Gonzalez-Tomlin spans decades. “I was fortunate to coach Dom when she was just 9 years old and again at 18. I got to witness her win a national championship in Seattle,” he reminisced. His long-standing relationship with her family, particularly her mother, who is also a national champion, adds depth to their collaborative coaching dynamic.
For Gonzalez-Tomlin, coaching in San Antonio is not just a job; it’s a privilege. When she received the opportunity to coach at Cornerstone, her decision was rooted in a desire to influence the lives of as many students as possible. “Coaching kids from age 11 to 18 is significant because it’s a transformative period in their lives. I aim to guide them through these changes,” she explained.
The Cornerstone Warriors recently returned from a tournament in Hawaii, a testament to their growing reputation in the sport. Their upcoming match is scheduled for Thursday, August 20, in Plano, Texas, where they will take on Prestonwood Christian Volleyball. The first serve is set for 5 p.m., and fans are eagerly anticipating another exciting performance from their talented team.
