SAN ANTONIO – In a pivotal meeting ahead of a special City Council session, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai addressed the implications of the San Antonio City Council’s decision regarding the proposed Spurs arena. The council is set to discuss whether to reinstate the arena project on the November ballot during their meeting scheduled for Monday.

This ambitious $1.3 billion NBA arena, planned for the historic Hemisfair site, requires financial commitments from multiple stakeholders. The Spurs organization is expected to contribute at least $500 million, while the city has proposed a maximum funding of $489 million. Additionally, Bexar County has committed to a contribution of up to $311 million.

During the upcoming council meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m. on August 17 in City Council Chambers, council members will deliberate on placing the city’s share of funding on the ballot. Importantly, this meeting coincides with the deadline for ordering a vote, underscoring the urgency of the decision.

Judge Sakai warned of potential complications should the city choose not to fulfill its $489 million obligation. “We are going to have a problem if there is a second vote and the city does not fulfill its obligation,” Sakai stated. He highlighted the risk of litigation, asserting that Bexar County would seek reimbursement for any lost costs related to the project.

Beyond the financial implications, Sakai emphasized the transformative potential of the Spurs arena for San Antonio’s downtown area and the East Side. He remarked, “I am making sure that the East Side is included in this whole overhaul, so to speak, of the new Spurs arena.” Plans include revitalizing county facilities, enhancing the Frost Bank and Freeman Coliseum, and collaborating with the San Antonio rodeo to foster community engagement.
