SAN ANTONIO – A tragic incident on Hardy Oak Boulevard in Stone Oak has reignited concerns among residents regarding the prevalence of speeding in the area. Many neighbors are expressing their frustration, noting that such a deadly crash was somewhat expected given the consistent disregard for speed limits.
On August 3, San Antonio police reported that 19-year-old Jaqueline Flores was driving at a staggering speed of 87 mph in a zone where the limit is 40 mph when she collided with 64-year-old Valerie Keeney.
One resident, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed regret about her decision to live on Hardy Oak Boulevard, stating, “Had I known how much, how often cars speed on Hardy Oak, I probably wouldn’t have chosen that house to live there.”
Another resident, Wallner, highlighted the dangers posed by the road’s elevation, saying, “They tend to come over that rise really quickly and ignore the fact that there’s a school right there. There are two schools in this area.” This sentiment underscores the urgent need for increased safety measures.
Wilkins Bisesi, another local resident, pointed out that nearby neighborhoods along Wilderness Oak have implemented safety measures, such as four-way stops, to mitigate speeding. She suggested that a similar approach could be beneficial for her neighborhood, Mesa Verde, which is also located near Hardy Oak Boulevard and Sable Canyon Road.
“Hardy Oak is the last roadway in Stone Oak where we want to be speeding,” Bisesi emphasized. “There are retirement homes, there are schools, there are neighborhoods full of children.” This statement reflects a growing community concern regarding the safety of vulnerable populations in the area.
Fatal Crash Details
The police report indicates that officers responded to the fatal crash around 11 a.m. on August 3 at the intersection of Hardy Oak Boulevard and Sable Canyon. According to authorities, Keeney was attempting to exit a neighborhood and head southbound on Hardy Oak Boulevard when she allegedly disregarded a stop sign. Flores, who was traveling northbound, crashed into her vehicle, resulting in a catastrophic collision.
The impact of the crash left Keeney trapped in her vehicle, and she later succumbed to her injuries. The tragic outcome of this incident serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for community awareness and proactive measures to ensure road safety.
Flores is scheduled for her next hearing on November 10, as the legal proceedings continue in this unfortunate case.
