SAN ANTONIO – As fall sports and marching band activities kick off, it’s crucial for students and families to stay mindful of the intense Texas heat. Heat safety experts are reiterating that preparation for the heat is just as essential as gearing up for the upcoming sports season.
San Antonio is entering one of its hottest periods of the year, and with outdoor practices ramping up, organizations focused on athlete safety are urging everyone to prioritize heat illness prevention.
Understanding the Importance of Heat Safety
The tragic death of Minnesota Vikings lineman Korey Stringer on August 1, 2001, due to exertional heat stroke, serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by extreme heat during training. His passing led to the establishment of the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI), which has since become a leader in heat safety education and research.
Partnering with the University of Connecticut, KSI has tirelessly worked to develop and promote safety policies aimed at preventing heat-related emergencies in sports.
“We want kids to play sports and band members to practice,” emphasizes Christy Eason, president of sport safety and education at KSI. “But we want them to do it safely.”
Thanks to policy changes inspired by Stringer’s legacy, there have been no reported deaths from exertional heat stroke in the NFL since his passing. This highlights the impact of proactive measures in ensuring athlete safety.
Challenges for High Schools
Despite progress at professional levels, high schools often face challenges in implementing consistent heat safety standards. Eason notes that many high schools haven’t adopted the same modifications that are now standard practice in professional sports.
Key modifications include gradual heat acclimatization, environmental monitoring, and access to cold-water immersion tubs. These measures can help prevent heat-related illnesses before they escalate into critical emergencies.
One of the most crucial safety practices is allowing adequate time for athletes and band members to adjust to high temperatures before increasing the intensity of their activities. Eason recommends a period of seven to ten consecutive days of heat exposure for effective acclimatization.
The initial week is especially significant since athletes are often pushing their limits while still acclimatizing to the heat and humidity.
As practices continue, heat safety advocates urge students, coaches, and parents to adhere to established guidelines, maintain hydration, and remain vigilant for any signs of heat illness.
Listening to one’s body is paramount. If anyone experiences dizziness, extreme fatigue, or other symptoms of heat-related illness, they should stop their activity immediately and seek help.
