NEW YORK – In a thrilling matchup that extended into extra innings, the New York Yankees showcased resilience, rallying to defeat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Friday night. This dramatic victory came after a rain delay that pushed the game well past midnight.

The win allowed the Yankees to improve their record in extra-inning games to 2-8, while simultaneously snapping the Braves’ impressive eight-game winning streak, a notable achievement considering the Braves are currently leading the NL East.

On the mound, Yankees left-hander Max Fried made a significant impact, pitching 6 1/3 scoreless innings against his former team. Tyler Mahle matched Fried’s performance with six shutout innings in his debut for Atlanta, demonstrating the prowess of both pitchers.

The Braves took a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning thanks to home runs from Austin Riley and Matt Olson. However, the Yankees refused to back down. With two outs and the game on the line, struggling catcher Austin Wells doubled off All-Star closer Raisel Iglesias to drive in a crucial run, keeping New York’s hopes alive.

Amed Rosario then walked, setting the stage for Ben Rice. The rookie delivered a clutch single on a 1-0 changeup, ripping the ball off the right-field fence to tie the game. Heliot Ramos was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Dylan Dodd came in to retire Luis García Jr., sending the game into extra innings.

In the 10th, after a series of strategic plays, including a crucial error by Iglesias, the Yankees capitalized. Rookie George Lombard Jr. reached on an infield single and advanced to third after a throwing error. David Bednar pitched a scoreless top of the inning, showcasing strong defensive plays to secure the Yankees’ chance to win.

With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Yankees manager made a strategic decision to intentionally walk Spencer Jones, loading the bases once again. Ryan McMahon then delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly, allowing García, the automatic runner, to score easily.

This victory was especially significant for the Yankees, who had struggled when trailing through eight innings, now improving to 5-42 in such scenarios. The win also marked the eighth time in ten games that a Yankees starter allowed no more than one run, exemplifying the team’s pitching depth and resilience.

Looking ahead, fans can anticipate an exciting matchup as Atlanta’s Chris Sale (12-6, 2.08 ERA) takes the mound against New York’s Gerrit Cole (5-5, 3.42) on Old Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium. This game promises to be a highlight in the ongoing season.
