DILLEY, Texas – A significant development has emerged as U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro announced the release of a Churchill High School student, Emely Charloth Suaza Chambo, and her father from the Dilley South Texas Family Residential Center. This release follows a detention that began on July 12, drawing attention to the conditions within such facilities.

Rep. Castro expressed relief upon hearing the news, stating, “I am glad that she is back with her mom, little brothers and the rest of her family.” This sentiment underscores the emotional toll that detentions can take on families, particularly minors.

During a visit to the ICE facility in Dilley on July 28, Castro had the opportunity to speak directly with Chambo. Reports indicate that Chambo and a friend were en route to a church in San Antonio when they were detained by ICE agents, with Chambo being the sole individual taken to a local immigration processing center.

In a turn of events, her father, Fernando Suaza Ortiz, upon arriving to pick her up, was also detained by ICE. Prior to his detention, he was employed at a Hilton Garden Inn, emphasizing the precarious situation many families find themselves in when facing immigration enforcement.

Rep. Castro has been an outspoken critic of the ICE facility in Dilley, advocating for its closure due to reports of deteriorating conditions for detainees, including inadequate bedding, food, and water supply. His efforts reflect a growing concern among lawmakers and advocates regarding the treatment of individuals held in immigration detention.

CoreCivic, the private company responsible for operating the facility, has stated that the center is under strict government oversight to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures. According to CoreCivic, the facility provides quality healthcare, educational programs, daily nutritious meals, and access to legal services, though these claims are met with skepticism by many advocates.
