DUBLIN – A wave of sorrow swept through Dublin as hundreds gathered to pay their respects to Glen Hansard, a beloved singer-songwriter and Academy Award winner, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident at the age of 56. His funeral took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a fitting venue for a man whose music resonated deeply with many.

The congregation included notable figures such as actors Steve Coogan and Chris O’Dowd, along with musicians like Bono, Hozier, Declan O’Rourke, and Imelda May. Fans and friends lined up for hours outside the cathedral to honor the memory of a man who had touched so many lives.

As the service began, a large crowd watched on big screens outside while pallbearers carried a beautifully adorned wicker coffin into the cathedral, a poignant symbol of Hansard’s unique spirit.

William Morton, the dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, spoke movingly about Hansard’s extraordinary talent and the impact he had on audiences worldwide. “Glen’s remarkable gifts and outstanding talent, which touched so many hearts, took him from the streets of Dublin to audiences across the globe,” Morton said.

The service was infused with music, featuring a heartfelt performance by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, who sang Hansard’s “The Song of Good Hope” alongside Markéta Irglová, Hansard’s longtime collaborator.

Bono, reflecting on his friendship with Hansard, noted, “Everyone who met him, they just remembered the day they met him.” He even shared a message from singer and poet Patti Smith, who had dedicated a lullaby to Hansard’s family, before reciting lyrics from U2’s “Beautiful Day.”

Hansard’s untimely passing occurred on July 29, just hours after he had participated in a traditional music session at a local pub. His widow, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, expressed gratitude to the police officers who responded to the accident and read a touching poem she had written for him during their early days together.

Although their three-year-old son was too young to attend the funeral, Saaritsa remarked that “the bright spirit he inherited from his father is with us,” a testament to Hansard’s enduring legacy.

Glen Hansard was not just a musician; he was a cultural icon. He was the frontman of the Irish rock band The Frames and gained fame for his role in the classic film “The Commitments.” Winning an Oscar in 2008 for the song “Falling Slowly” from the movie “Once,” Hansard’s influence extended beyond music into the realms of film and theater, with a stage adaptation of “Once” winning eight Tony Awards in 2012.

He was also part of the acclaimed duo The Swell Season with Irglová and released several solo albums, including “Didn’t He Ramble,” which earned a Grammy nomination in 2016. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Hansard was known for his philanthropic efforts, leading a Christmas Eve busk outside Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre to benefit a homelessness charity.

Tributes from fellow musicians poured in, with Bruce Springsteen expressing his heartbreak over the loss of “a great musician, a good friend, and a generous and gracious man” on Instagram. The reverberations of Hansard’s music and spirit will undoubtedly linger on, cherished by those who knew him and those who were touched by his artistry.
