In recent days, eastern Washington state has faced devastating wildfires that have forced the evacuation of around 60,000 residents in the Spokane area. Tragically, these fires have destroyed at least 600 homes, businesses, and various structures. Fortunately, light winds and cooler temperatures were forecasted for Monday, which could assist firefighters battling the flames.
As of Monday morning, the fires had consumed about 12.5 square miles (32 square kilometers) around Spokane, the state’s second-largest city. Despite the changing weather conditions, the fires remained 0% contained, according to Courtney James, a spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

While the forecast indicated lower temperatures and light winds following strong gusts on Sunday, no rain was expected, which has raised concerns among officials. The wildfires are just a part of a much larger crisis, as dozens of fires continue to rage across the Western United States, stretching the abilities of federal, state, and local firefighting agencies.
So far, thankfully, there have been no reported injuries or missing persons related to these fires, but officials have cautioned that it is still early in the emergency response. Among those evacuated were patients from the U.S. Veterans Affairs hospital in Spokane.
Video footage from the area shows buildings engulfed in flames and thick smoke hanging over neighborhoods. The destruction is evident, with many homes reduced to ashes, leaving only chimneys standing. “We are not out of danger,” stated U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell during a press conference, underscoring the challenges that lie ahead in the coming days.
While investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the wildfires, reports indicate that two unauthorized drone operators have been cited for flying over the fires, which complicates firefighting efforts. There were at least 26 incidents of drones interfering with firefighting operations on Sunday.
Wildfires Across the Region
Spokane is not alone in facing wildfire challenges. In Idaho and Oregon, crews have been battling a massive fire for ten days, which has burned nearly 525 square miles (1,360 square kilometers) of grassland. This fire threatens more than 600 homes and 800 structures.
In central Utah, another wildfire has more than doubled in size, now covering nearly 57 square miles (147 square kilometers). Local authorities have reported that over 100 cattle have been lost to the flames, emphasizing the catastrophic impact of these fires on wildlife and livestock.
Emergency Response Efforts
In response to the crisis, Spokane authorities have set up shelters at the city’s main convention center, currently housing about 400 evacuees. Additionally, Spokane Public Schools opened a free emergency drop-in camp for children to provide support for families during this challenging time.
