The Dallas Cowboys are set to open their 2026 training camp in Oxnard, California. Under the guidance of head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the team is optimistic about their offseason moves, believing they are trending in the right direction.

As the Cowboys prepare for this pivotal moment, several storylines are emerging that will shape their training camp experience.

New Defensive Coordinator in Big D

One of the most significant moves this offseason was the hiring of Christian Parker from the Philadelphia Eagles as the new defensive coordinator. Following last season’s struggles on defense, which were among the worst in franchise history, this change was necessary.

Parker, a 34-year-old first-time defensive coordinator, is tasked with revitalizing the defensive unit. Schottenheimer has referred to Parker as a “superstar,” and his previous experience as the Eagles’ passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, including a Super Bowl LIX victory, adds to his credibility. Early reports indicate that players are responding well to his 3-4 defensive scheme, and fans attending camp will get their first glimpse of Parker’s approach.

A Shutdown Safety in the Making

To strengthen their defense, the Cowboys traded up to draft Caleb Downs, a former Ohio State defensive back, with the 11th overall pick in April. Since joining the team at The Star in Frisco, Texas, Downs has generated buzz for his impressive work ethic and football intelligence.

Downs has been taking starting reps since the Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and is expected to be a Day 1 starter. Parker is known for developing elite young defensive backs and plans to leverage Downs’ versatility throughout the secondary.

Green Dot for Overshown

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is poised to make an impact if he can stay healthy. The fourth-year linebacker has had a productive offseason and is ready to excel under Parker’s leadership.

Overshown has earned the “green dot” designation, indicating he is the defensive quarterback, responsible for receiving radio communications from the coaches and relaying play calls. Despite his injury history, which has limited him to just 19 games over three seasons, his positive outlook and talent could significantly enhance the Cowboys’ defense.

Defense Wins Championships

Historically, Super Bowl champions have balanced offensive and defensive units. The 2025 Dallas Cowboys fell short of this balance, boasting a potent offense but a struggling defense. Consequently, five of the seven draft picks in 2026 were defensive players.

First-round pick Malachi Lawrence (EDGE) from UCF aims to bolster the pass rush, while third-round pick Jaishawn Barham (linebacker) out of Michigan will add depth. Additionally, the Cowboys acquired Rashan Gary (EDGE) from the Green Bay Packers and Dee Winters (linebacker) from the San Francisco 49ers.

The Cowboys have been aggressive in free agency, adding defensive backs Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant, P.J. Locke, and Derion Kendrick, along with defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard. As training camp begins, it will be crucial to see if these changes translate into improved performance on the field.

Pressure on Pickens

George Pickens, acquired in a blockbuster trade last offseason, has quickly established himself as a star alongside CeeDee Lamb, forming a dynamic duo in a high-octane offense. Heading into 2026, Pickens finds himself under scrutiny, as he is the only player in the NFL currently playing under the franchise tag.

This situation places significant pressure on him, as it casts uncertainty on his future with the Cowboys beyond this season.

Continuing Offensive Excellence

Despite some challenging seasons, the Cowboys’ offense remains a strong point, and they are well-positioned for another successful year. With Schottenheimer returning all 11 offensive starters and maintaining deep schematic continuity, the team is eager to build on past successes.

Dak Prescott enters camp healthy and motivated, supported by a formidable arsenal that includes CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and reliable tight end Jake Ferguson, along with a strong running back committee.
