In a recent update from a local animal shelter, representatives have emphasized the urgent need for community involvement in pet adoption and fostering efforts. “She said there are animals for everyone,” noted a shelter spokesperson, highlighting the variety of animals available for adoption.
The shelter currently has a wide range of pets, including “puppies, kittens, cats, dogs, all breeds,” according to Chaffin, an Animal Care Services official. These animals are in need of loving homes, and the shelter is actively seeking the public’s assistance.
Unfortunately, the situation has become increasingly dire. The shelter is not currently housing pets displaced by the recent flooding in the area. Instead, staff have been involved in several technical rescues, saving animals trapped in flooded drainage ditches and rising waters. This has exacerbated an already crowded shelter environment.
Adding to the shelter’s challenges, recent animal cruelty investigations have led to an influx of seized animals. For instance, on Thursday, authorities rescued 30 dogs from a home in a case of reported neglect. Chaffin confirmed that these dogs have now entered the shelter, further straining resources.
In light of these circumstances, Chaffin stated, “We did everything we possibly could to make sure we reduced euthanasia.” However, due to the ongoing legal processes surrounding the cruelty investigations, these dogs must remain at the shelter, occupying critical kennel space that could otherwise be used for new arrivals.
To alleviate this situation, Chaffin is urging the community to step forward and foster or adopt animals. “Essentially, we are desperate for our community to step forward,” she said. “If a pet has been here over 24 hours longer than it needed to, that’s still critical for us.”
To encourage adoptions, Animal Care Services is waiving all adoption fees through Sunday. Each adopted pet will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped at no additional cost. However, potential adopters must complete the full pet screening and adoption or foster application process.
