On Thursday morning, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Texas Panhandle, marking one of the strongest seismic events recorded in the region’s history. This tremor, which occurred at 5:21 a.m., was centered approximately 24 miles south-southeast of Spearman, close to the Texas-Oklahoma border.
The effects of the earthquake were felt not only throughout the rural Texas Panhandle but also reached residents in southern Oklahoma and New Mexico. Social media was abuzz with reports from Spearman residents, who described how their homes shook during the quake. Interestingly, individuals in Oklahoma City, nearly 250 miles away, also reported feeling the seismic activity.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of structural damage or injuries following the event. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) anticipates that the economic losses will be minimal. This is reassuring news for a region that has experienced several smaller earthquakes in recent years.
A.J. Harrel, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Amarillo, noted that the earthquake originated from northwest Roberts County, nearly 50 miles south of Spearman. He emphasized that such a strong earthquake is not typical for the area, stating, “We’ve had smaller earthquakes within the past year or two. They do happen here, just not frequently.”
In fact, Texas has recorded seven earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater in the last five years. According to Earthquake Track, the recent earthquake near Spearman is tied for the sixth-largest in Texas history.
Notably, last year saw two of the largest earthquakes in state history occur in West Texas. While some earthquakes in this region have been attributed to increased hydraulic fracturing activities, the cause of the recent tremor in the Panhandle remains unclear. Harrel explained, “There are some minor fault lines in the Texas Panhandle that could cause weak to moderate earthquakes. They’re just not very frequent.”
