LA SALLE COUNTY, Texas – In a proactive measure to address potential flooding along the Nueces River, La Salle County officials activated an emergency response on Thursday, deploying nearly 350 personnel from various agencies across Texas and neighboring states. This decisive action reflects the county’s commitment to safeguarding its residents and minimizing the impact of natural disasters.
During a press conference held on Monday night, La Salle County Judge Leodoro Martinez III emphasized the importance of early intervention. “We wanted to be proactive and get the community notified and start getting way ahead of the ball,” he stated. “You know, just don’t want to be the next victims, especially in our small hometown.”
With a population of approximately 3,500 within city limits and around 7,500 countywide, La Salle County includes many ranches along the Nueces River corridor. Martinez noted that officials have been conducting door-to-door notifications, particularly in the Mustang Creek area, recognized historically as the most flood-prone region of the county.
“Anybody living in the Mustang Creek area will be the first ones notified,” Martinez remarked, underscoring the county’s focused efforts on ensuring community safety. In addition to door-to-door outreach, officials implemented a color-coded alert system, moving to a yellow alert as of Monday night. This alert encourages residents to prepare emergency bags and be ready to evacuate if necessary.
To support displaced residents, the American Red Cross has established a shelter, while a separate pet shelter is available at the county fairgrounds. Martinez recalled that the last significant flooding event in the area occurred in 2013, highlighting the importance of preparedness.
Interestingly, the current flooding concerns are not attributed to local rainfall, which poses a communication challenge for officials trying to convey urgency to residents who may not be experiencing rain in their immediate vicinity. “It’s been dry, but the information we’re putting out — we’re constantly putting out information,” Martinez explained. “These agencies are going door to door, notifying the people, especially in the areas that we know we’re going to have issues.”
Leading the response effort is Texas Task Force One, with additional personnel from Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma joining the mission. Local law enforcement agencies, including Texas Game Wardens and the Texas Department of Public Safety, are also actively contributing to the response efforts.
Residents in need of assistance during this potential flooding event are encouraged to reach out via the county’s local emergency line or by dialing 911. County officials have compiled a list of residents who may require help evacuating and are prioritizing these individuals for assistance.
