Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, tragically passed away following a July 4 boat trip with his friends to Horn Island, a popular destination on the Gulf Coast. His family, alongside renowned civil rights leaders, will gather on Monday to honor his life at a local church.

The funeral service will be led by Rev. Al Sharpton, who is known for his activism and advocacy for civil rights. Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney representing Wells’ family, will call for justice during the ceremony. Christine Wonsley, Wells’ mother, shared that they plan to celebrate his life, describing him as a “bright light” and a “sensitive soul.”

“He would not want us to be sitting around crying and eating, so we’re going to have a party to celebrate him,” she mentioned, emphasizing the importance of honoring his joyful spirit.

Wells’ death has sparked national attention and discussions about racial issues and trust in law enforcement, particularly in the Deep South. The young man, who was Black, was on the trip with a group of friends, all of whom were white. He did not return to the mainland with them that evening, and his body was found two days later off the coast of the island.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated that Wells’ friends are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Initial interviews suggested that Wells chose to stay on the island and that his friends believed he would arrange another ride back. However, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance have led to widespread speculation and raised questions from his parents regarding why he was left behind.

Crump has indicated that a witness suggested Wells intended to return with his friends, contradicting the sheriff’s account. Additionally, there are concerns about messages potentially being deleted from Wells’ phone, which was discovered with his friends, along with his keys.

Leading his own investigation, Crump announced plans to work with the local prosecutor to examine the phone. The prosecutor has agreed to present the findings to a grand jury once their investigation concludes.

“Our lived experiences tell us that we must question everything, everybody’s role, law enforcement’s role,” Crump stated, highlighting the necessity of transparency and accountability in such cases.

Wells, who would have turned 19 next month, was a promising athlete, playing wide receiver for the football team at Southwest Mississippi Community College, and had aspirations of competing at a high-level Division I program. His coach, Les George, described him as sociable and friendly, noting that he would often stop by just to chat.

Support from the Black community has poured in, with actor Tyler Perry assisting with funeral expenses and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick funding an independent autopsy. Filmmaker Spike Lee also showed his support by attending a recent news conference held by Wells’ family.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have issued a joint statement calling for an independent and transparent investigation into Wells’ death, expressing that “too many questions remain unanswered.” They hope that the widespread concern and support will provide some comfort to Wells’ family in the days ahead.
