BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public warning about a scam targeting residents in the area, which has led to significant financial losses for several families.
A man named Sergio Alejandro Morales-Villareal is wanted for allegedly stealing between $2,500 and $30,000 from unsuspecting homeowners who hired him for electrical work. According to the sheriff’s office, Morales-Villareal collected large upfront payments but never completed the jobs.
Victims reported that he made numerous excuses for delays and eventually stopped communicating altogether. For instance, one family lost about $6,000, while others reported losses of $1,500 and $1,100.
To protect yourself from similar scams, the sheriff’s office recommends verifying the legitimacy of contractors before hiring them. Here are some tips:
- Check for proper licensing and insurance.
- Read reviews and ask for references from previous clients.
- Get detailed written estimates and contracts.
- Never pay large sums upfront without a clear agreement.
If you believe you have been a victim of this scam or have any information about Morales-Villareal, you are urged to contact the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office at 210-335-6000.
