LOS ANGELES – The anticipation surrounding this year’s Emmy nominations is electrifying, with buzz building around several standout shows. “Pluribus,” an innovative series from the creator of “Breaking Bad,” has the potential to make history as a record-setting freshman show. Meanwhile, “The Pitt,” a beloved emergency room drama, is gearing up for what many expect to be a dominant sophomore season. Adding to the excitement, the acclaimed series “Hacks” is preparing for a heartfelt graduation celebration as the nominations are revealed on Wednesday morning.
In a special event at the Television Academy in Los Angeles, recent Emmy winners Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller will announce the nominees. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 14 at the Peacock Theater, a venue that also hosts the Oscars. Mariska Hargitay, known for her long-standing role in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” will take the stage as host.

HBO Max’s “The Pitt” made waves last year as a rookie sensation, capturing prestigious awards including Best Drama Series, Best Actor for Noah Wyle, and Best Supporting Actress for Katherine LaNasa. As a show that merges the best of classic network storytelling with the modern flair of streaming, “The Pitt” is set to return for another season, much to the delight of its fans.
Both Wyle and LaNasa are expected to receive nominations again, along with a strong ensemble cast that could dominate the supporting categories, similar to past Emmy contenders like “The White Lotus.” However, “The Pitt” might find itself in stiff competition from “Pluribus,” an Apple TV+ series that could potentially break the long-standing record for most Emmy nominations for a debut season, held by “NYPD Blue” since 1994.
“Pluribus,” which features Rhea Seehorn as the lead, is anticipated to excel in technical categories and is expected to earn Seehorn a nomination for Best Actress following her Golden Globes win. Karolina Wydra, who plays a pivotal role in the series, is also a strong contender for a supporting nomination.
This year’s comedy category is particularly competitive, especially with the absence of last year’s breakout hit, “The Studio.” The beloved series “Hacks” is likely to see a significant number of nominations as it celebrates its fifth and final season. Jean Smart, who has been nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy every year since the show’s debut, is likely to continue her winning streak.
Smart’s co-star Hannah Einbinder, who won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy last year, is also expected to be nominated again. Their co-creator, Paul W. Downs, is likely to receive recognition as well. This season, he faces tough competition, including legendary actor Harrison Ford, who may finally secure an award for his performance in the new series “Shrinking.”
Despite the absence of “The Studio,” Apple TV+ is poised to shine in the comedy categories with possible nominations for “Shrinking,” alongside newcomers like “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” which features stars Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer as likely nominees, as well as the acclaimed horror comedy “Widow’s Bay.”
Netflix’s “Beef” is expected to make a significant impact in the limited or anthology series categories, particularly after competitors like “Task” transitioned to the drama category with their upcoming second season. “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” from FX could emerge as its main rival.
Guest acting categories at the Emmys always feature big names, with potential candidates this year including the late Rob Reiner for his role on “The Bear” and Michael J. Fox for his heartfelt performance in “Shrinking.”
