SAN ANTONIO – The recent announcement of Toyota Motor North America’s $3.6 billion expansion has sparked excitement among local leaders and residents, particularly in the South Side of San Antonio. Weston Martinez, president of the Starbright South Side Neighborhood Overlook Association, expressed that this development represents a significant milestone for the community.

“We believe this expansion by Toyota is going to be that next chapter,” Martinez stated, emphasizing the potential for growth and opportunity this project brings to the area.

The expansion is expected to create approximately 2,000 new jobs over the next four years, which Martinez sees as a pivotal step towards enhancing the economic landscape of the South Side. However, he hopes for a broader impact that extends beyond the confines of Toyota’s manufacturing plant.

“Everybody says they’re coming to the South Side and you don’t see much happening,” he noted, pointing to the specific locations of the plant on Lone Star Pass and Zarzamora Street.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas is strategically located at the intersection of Applewhite Road and Lone Star Pass, falling within the jurisdiction of San Antonio’s City District 3. District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran echoed Martinez’s sentiments, expressing her desire to ensure that the expansion positively impacts the entire southern sector of San Antonio.

“We can talk … how we can make sure it impacts the rest of the southern sector of San Antonio and not simply just the campus of Toyota,” Viagran remarked, highlighting the need for inclusive planning.

Martinez further stressed the importance of involving community voices in the planning process. He expressed concern over past experiences where local input was overlooked, leading to decisions that could adversely affect property rights and land use in the area.

“We don’t want to get left in the dark like we were last time… it’s crucial that we maintain our property rights and have a say in the future of our community,” he asserted, referencing concerns about potential zoning changes that could limit residents’ abilities to utilize their land.

In addition to job creation, Martinez highlighted the pressing need for improved city services, especially given that local property taxes have increased. He believes that the multi-billion-dollar expansion should lead to enhanced infrastructure and community services.

Viagran, recognizing the urgency of these discussions, affirmed that addressing infrastructure needs is a top priority. “I’m going to talk infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure,” she stated, emphasizing that the area has historically lacked adequate services.

“We fully expect those partnerships to now come to fruition where the entire region is going to benefit,” Martinez concluded, showcasing optimism for the future. He announced that the Starbright South Side Neighborhood Overlook Association plans to host a meeting to connect residents with Councilwoman Viagran, their county commissioner, and Toyota officials to discuss the expansion and its implications.

Details about the meeting, including the date and time, will be posted on the association’s website, ensuring that community members have the opportunity to engage directly with key stakeholders.
