BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A serious incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a man who allegedly approached them while holding large knives. Sheriff Javier Salazar provided details of the event, which took place around 6:30 p.m. in the 8400 block of Knapp Rise, near Ranch View and Culebra Road.
According to reports, neighbors had seen the man behaving oddly, wandering onto porches and hiding near their homes. Sheriff Salazar described the weapons as miniature samurai-style blades that were about 10 inches long.
In response to the situation, BCSO’s Mental Health Unit was dispatched to assist in de-escalating the conflict. However, deputies made contact with the man before the unit arrived. Three deputies tried to communicate with him, repeatedly asking him to drop the knives while they took cover behind a pillar for safety.
Unfortunately, the man did not comply with their requests and instead advanced toward the deputies. As a result, one deputy fired several shots, hitting the man twice. He was immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition, underwent surgery, and is expected to survive, as confirmed by Sheriff Salazar.
Sheriff Salazar characterized the incident as “an unfortunate case of a man undergoing a mental health crisis.” The deputy involved in the shooting has been with BCSO for 16 years and has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
Investigators believe the man is in his 30s, and they are looking into whether he resides in the area. Sheriff Salazar also mentioned that the man may have had an encounter with deputies the night before this incident.
