SAN ANTONIO – As the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks clash in the NBA Finals, an exciting contest is unfolding off the court. The San Antonio Food Bank and the Food Bank of New York City are engaged in a spirited fundraising challenge to see which city can raise the most money during this thrilling championship series.
“It’s a friendly challenge with a serious purpose,” stated Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank. This initiative, aptly named “Slam Dunk on Hunger,” invites basketball enthusiasts to leverage their passion for the NBA to support local families facing food insecurity.
Cooper elaborated, “This campaign to Slam Dunk on Hunger will run all the way through the series until that final buzzer of the final game rings.” The goal is not only to foster competition between the cities but also to provide essential support to those in need.
“No matter who wins the series, I think both communities will benefit,” Cooper noted. “The victory will go to those families that are food insecure and would benefit from the funds raised.” This sentiment highlights the collaborative spirit behind the challenge, transcending the rivalry on the court.
While the Knicks currently lead in the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Food Bank reports it is ahead in the fundraising competition. Following Game 1, the San Antonio Food Bank raised approximately $30,000, putting them about $5,000 to $6,000 ahead of their New York counterparts.
However, food bank leaders emphasize that more support is essential, particularly as the San Antonio Food Bank anticipates serving around 140,000 people each week throughout the summer. This period typically sees a rise in demand for food assistance, making the efforts of this campaign even more critical.
“My dream is that we bring home that trophy and families bring home some groceries because we all came together in such a great cause,” Cooper expressed, encapsulating the hope and determination behind the initiative.
The fundraising competition is set to continue until the conclusion of the NBA Finals series. Donations made during this campaign will contribute to each city’s total, with proceeds directly supporting food assistance for families in need, demonstrating how sports can unite communities for a greater good.
