DETROIT – In a thrilling Game 7 showdown, the Cleveland Cavaliers triumphed over the Detroit Pistons with a decisive 125-94 victory, pushing them into the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018. This significant win highlights the Cavaliers’ potential as a formidable contender in the playoffs.

Donovan Mitchell led the charge for the Cavaliers, contributing 26 points, while Jarrett Allen and Sam Merrill each added 23 points to the scoreboard. Evan Mobley also made a notable impact, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, showcasing the team’s depth and talent.

The Cavaliers, who entered the playoffs as the fourth seed, managed to eliminate the top-seeded Pistons, setting up a showdown against the third-seeded New York Knicks in the next round. Game 1 of this highly anticipated series is scheduled to tip off Tuesday in New York.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, Mitchell expressed, “We didn’t just come here just to win a goal. Even last year, when we lost to Indiana, we had our goals set on getting to the (NBA) Finals. We’re just one step closer.” His comments resonate with the Cavaliers’ ambitions and the resilience they’ve shown throughout the season.

On the opposing side, the Pistons fell short despite a strong season, with Cade Cunningham and Duncan Robinson contributing 13 points each. Cunningham lamented the loss, stating, “That game sucked. Being back home, wanted to get this win in front of our fans. It reminded me of last year, losing on home court. It’s not a great feeling.”

From the outset, the Cavaliers established their dominance, dictating the pace of the game and capitalizing on the Pistons’ cold shooting. They led 31-22 at the end of the first quarter and quickly extended their lead with a 24-9 run early in the second. By halftime, the Cavaliers had built a commanding 64-47 lead, leaving the Pistons struggling to find their rhythm.

The second half saw the Cavaliers maintain their momentum, with their lead swelling to as much as 35 points. Coach Kenny Atkinson emphasized the importance of starting strong, stating, “We knew that start was monumental… that was key, and then coming out of halftime was the same message: ‘We got to win this first five minutes to put them on their heels.’”

The Cavaliers’ victory not only marks a significant milestone for the franchise but also reaffirms their status as a serious threat in the Eastern Conference. As they prepare to face the Knicks, the focus will be on maintaining the intensity and force that propelled them through this decisive Game 7.
