MINNEAPOLIS – In a thrilling conclusion to their playoff series, the San Antonio Spurs have advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2017. They secured their spot by defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves with a commanding score of 139-109 on Friday night.

The Spurs will now face the Oklahoma City Thunder, who have swept their first two playoff series. The first game of the Western Conference finals is set for Monday at 7:30 p.m. on the road. Fans can look forward to an exciting matchup as San Antonio aims for a chance to compete in the NBA Finals.

Highlighting the Spurs’ victory was the standout performance from Stephon Castle, who scored an impressive 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. His contribution was crucial in clinching the series victory in six games. De’Aaron Fox also made a significant impact, contributing 21 points and nine assists, while rookie Dylan Harper added 15 points off the bench.

Despite facing tight defensive coverage from the Timberwolves, Victor Wembanyama managed to score 19 points in 27 minutes of play. After a surprising ejection in Game 4, Wembanyama bounced back with a strong performance in Game 5, showcasing his ability as a defensive presence and transition player.

The San Antonio backcourt proved to be a formidable force, with their size, intelligence, and shooting accuracy overwhelming the Timberwolves’ defense. Castle’s shooting was particularly noteworthy; he made his first five three-pointers and finished the night 11 for 16 from the field. Fox was also lethal from beyond the arc, going 3 for 3, while Julian Champagnie contributed four three-pointers among his 18 points.

On the opposing side, Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards scored 24 points but struggled with his shooting, going 9-for-26. The team received additional support from reserves Terrence Shannon and Naz Reid, who scored 21 and 18 points respectively. However, the Timberwolves struggled against the Spurs’ relentless switch-heavy defense, leading to another disappointing elimination performance.

This defeat echoed past disappointments for the Timberwolves, a team that has experienced a remarkable playoff journey over the last three years but has fallen short in critical moments. Last year, they faced a 30-point loss to the Thunder in the Western Conference finals, and in 2024, they were eliminated by the Mavericks in a similar fashion.
