NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – A remarkable story is unfolding in Texas, where a talented mariachi band from McAllen, who faced detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is set to perform alongside renowned country music star Kacey Musgraves. This inspiring turn of events highlights the resilience and talent of “The Mariachi Brothers,” who will take the stage at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels from May 3-5.

The concerts at Gruene Hall will begin at 8 p.m., with Musgraves following at 9 p.m. The band, consisting of Antonio Gámez-Cuéllar, 18; Caleb Gámez-Cuéllar, 14; and Joshua Gámez-Cuéllar, 12, along with their parents, were released from ICE custody in March after lawmakers and politicians advocated for their release.

Initially detained on February 25 during a routine check-in with immigration officials, their situation gained national attention when public figures began to criticize the family’s detention on social media. The Gámez-Cuéllar family entered the U.S. in May 2023 using the CBP One app, a platform introduced during President Joe Biden’s administration to streamline the asylum-seeking process.

The Gámez-Cuéllar brothers are not just any musicians; they are part of the McAllen High School Mariachi Oro band, a group that has accomplished amazing feats, including performances at the White House and Carnegie Hall and winning eight state championships.

As for the upcoming concerts, Gruene Hall’s website has confirmed that each night is completely sold out, reflecting the community’s support and excitement for this talented family. This event not only showcases their musical abilities but also serves as a testament to their journey and resilience in the face of challenges.

The Texas Tribune has contributed to this inspiring report, reminding us all of the power of music and community in overcoming adversity.
