SAN ANTONIO – In a significant development in the realm of illegal gambling enforcement, Carrie Vera Gutierrez, the owner of the Blessed Sweepstakes gaming room located on Hildebrand Avenue, has been arrested and charged with a state felony, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest took place on a Friday and was confirmed through online jail records, which reveal that Gutierrez is facing four distinct charges related to her establishment’s operations.

This legal action follows a raid conducted by BCSO deputies on March 31, which resulted in the shutdown of what investigators described as an illegal gambling operation. During this raid, three employees were apprehended: Kambry Ybarra, Alissa Arenas, and Anthony Vera, all facing charges linked to the operation. Additionally, eight other individuals received citations for their involvement.

The crux of the investigation revealed that the gambling operation was deemed illegal primarily because it employed a payout system involving beads that represented a specific cash value. Winners at Blessed Sweepstakes could exchange these beads for U.S. dollars, a practice that contradicts Texas gambling laws. Law enforcement officials clarified that such indirect payout mechanisms still fall under the definition of gambling promotion and maintaining a gambling facility.

Gutierrez has publicly stated that the raid has left her facing substantial financial losses, estimated at approximately $80,000. This figure includes costs associated with posting bond and hiring legal representation for her employees.

As investigations continue, this case serves as a critical reminder of the legal boundaries surrounding gambling operations in Texas, urging business owners to remain vigilant and compliant with state regulations.
