BRUSSELS – In a significant diplomatic effort, representatives from over 60 nations have convened in Brussels to engage with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa on pressing issues of stability, security, and the pursuit of long-term peace in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. This meeting occurs amidst ongoing crises in the Middle East, particularly in Iran and Lebanon, drawing global attention away from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, co-hosting the meeting alongside the EU’s chief diplomat Kaja Kallas, expressed concerns regarding the deteriorating situation. He noted, “Ongoing attacks in the West Bank and continued devastation in Gaza dims the prospect for a two-state solution.” Prévot emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We observe without naivety that the two-state solution is being made more difficult by the day.”

Despite these challenges, Prévot reaffirmed the belief shared by Belgium and numerous European and Arab partners that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. This sentiment is echoed by many within the international community, which views stability in the region as integral to broader geopolitical interests.

The European Union, as the largest single donor to the Palestinian Authority, plays a crucial role in the region. With President Mahmoud Abbas leading from Ramallah for two decades, the EU has opted for multilateral diplomacy, favoring the United Nations’ approach over the U.S.-led Board of Peace established during Donald Trump’s administration. However, the EU is keenly aware of the need to remain an active participant in diplomatic efforts amidst a rapidly evolving situation close to its borders.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has sparked outrage across Europe, leading many EU leaders to condemn Israel’s military actions and press for accountability. The recent political shift in Hungary, following the ousting of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán—a staunch ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—may pave the way for stronger EU responses, including potential sanctions against Israeli settlers and a reevaluation of diplomatic ties.

In the West Bank, residents have expressed concerns that the ongoing conflict, particularly the situation with Iran, has allowed Israel to tighten its control over the territory. Reports indicate a spike in settler violence and increased military restrictions, justified by security concerns.

During the Brussels meeting, Prime Minister Mustafa articulated the need for Gaza to operate under a unified governance structure. He stated, “Gaza requires one state, one government, one law and one goal,” advocating for effective coordination among the International Stabilization Force, Palestinian Authority, and other international bodies. He stressed the importance of a cohesive security framework, insisting that “Security must not be fragmented.”

Furthermore, Mustafa called for the “gradual and responsible collection of arms from all armed groups” and emphasized the necessity of a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. These statements reflect a growing recognition of the complex realities on the ground and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions that prioritize peace and security for all parties involved.
