WASHINGTON – In a significant political move, the House of Representatives recently rejected a resolution that aimed to compel President Donald Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from the ongoing military engagement with Iran unless explicitly authorized by Congress. This decision marks yet another instance where similar proposals have failed to gain traction, primarily due to the solid backing Trump continues to receive from Republican lawmakers.

The vote, which concluded with a narrow margin of 213-214, came on the heels of a failed attempt in the Senate just a day prior. Tensions have escalated since the U.S. and Israel conducted strikes against Iran on February 28, leading to a fragile ceasefire that is now in its second week.

Democrats have expressed increasing concern that the U.S. risks becoming deeply entrenched in another protracted conflict in the Middle East. They have vowed to persist in their efforts to challenge the administration’s military actions, anticipating further votes concerning war powers in the weeks to come.

Commenting on the situation, New York Rep. Gregory Meeks, who serves as the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated, “We’re standing at the edge of a cliff and Congress must act before the president pushes off. Every day we delay, we inch closer to a conflict with no exit ramp.” This sentiment captures the urgency felt by many lawmakers regarding the current military engagement.

On the other hand, Republicans characterized the Democratic push to limit military action as hypocritical. Florida Rep. Brian Mast highlighted the lack of Congressional approval during the Biden administration when U.S. forces conducted operations against Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen in 2024. Mast remarked, “When Joe Biden was responding to merchant marine vessels being attacked, it was OK. No war power needed. It went on for about a year. President Trump responds — war power, war power, war power. … That’s the hypocrisy.”

Under the War Powers Act of 1973, Congress is required to declare war or authorize the use of force within 60 days of military action, a deadline that approaches at the end of April regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. Lawmakers have made it clear that they expect the Republican administration to provide a strategy for concluding the war.

Despite the failure of the House vote, it served to illuminate some of the war’s detrimental consequences, including the exorbitant financial costs, the loss of at least 13 service members, rising gas prices, and tensions with longstanding allies who oppose Trump’s military actions. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash, underscored the impact on American families, stating, “Gas prices at home are up to $7 in my home state, and families are hurting. Another 10,000 U.S. troops are being sent in to join 50,000 already stationed in the Middle East with absolutely no strategy, no plan and no exit.”

In defense of the President’s actions, Republicans argue that Trump is taking necessary steps against an Iranian government that has historically posed threats to the region and its citizens. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., noted, “President Donald Trump has sent a message that those who threaten the United States and our partners will be ultimately held accountable.”

In a notable dissent, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky was the sole Republican to break ranks and support the resolution to withdraw U.S. forces. Conversely, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine was the only Democrat to oppose the measure. The initial House vote aimed at curbing Trump’s military actions in Iran also fell short in early March, concluding with a vote of 212-219.
