LAS VEGAS – Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is facing some serious challenges in the upcoming “Spider-Man” movie. After the dramatic events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” he made a tough decision: he wants to make his friends forget his superhero identity. This emotional journey is at the heart of the new film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
During the recent CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Sony Pictures shared exciting new footage from the film. In a surprising twist, Zendaya’s character, MJ, seems to have a new boyfriend, which adds another layer of complexity to Peter Parker’s life.
It’s been five years since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” took the world by storm, raking in over $1.9 billion globally. The anticipation for this latest installment is palpable, especially after the trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” shattered records with over 1 billion views in just four days!
Tom Holland himself addressed the audience through a video message, claiming that this installment is the most emotional Spider-Man film yet and the most mature. He introduced a scene where he attends a housewarming party for MJ and Jacob Batalon’s character, Ned, introducing himself with a new name: “Maynard … just a neighbor from across the hall.”
This film marks the directorial debut of Destin Daniel Cretton, known for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Fans can look forward to its release in theaters on July 31.
Sony Pictures has a history of kicking off CinemaCon with exciting announcements. This year, they not only revealed new footage from “Spider-Man” but also teased an R-rated adaptation of the popular video game “Bloodborne.” Additionally, they announced the upcoming “Grand Gear,” directed by Takashi Yamazaki, which is set to hit theaters on February 18, 2028.
Moreover, attendees were given a sneak peek at the finale of the “Spider-Verse,” learned the title of the next “Jumanji” movie, “Open World,” and previewed new projects, including “Resident Evil” directed by Zach Cregger.
In a notable announcement, they showcased Aaron Sorkin’s new film, “The Social Reckoning,” featuring Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. This movie, scheduled for release in October, follows the story of Frances Haugen, who leaked internal Facebook documents. Sorkin described this film as a “real David and Goliath story,” emphasizing the importance of sharing these revelations.
Sony Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman expressed optimism about the upcoming movie year, despite acknowledging the industry’s challenges, such as declining admissions since before the pandemic. He emphasized the need for studios to produce a diverse range of films to cater to various audiences, while also suggesting that theaters should enhance the moviegoing experience by limiting advertising and enforcing longer theatrical windows.
Rothman concluded with a supportive message, stating, “I’m not heckling; I’m rooting for you,” encouraging theaters and studios to collaborate for a successful cinematic future.
