BULVERDE, Texas – Three days after a tragic incident at Hill County College Preparatory High School, where a 15-year-old student shot a teacher before taking his own life, local and state government agencies are still withholding the identity of the shooter.

The Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reported that the student was pronounced dead at the scene. This heartbreaking event unfolded when the student brought his grandfather’s gun to school, with family members anxiously waiting in the reunification line.

A school resource officer, a Bulverde police officer assigned to the school, was unfortunately not present during the shooting. In Texas, state law mandates that public schools must have at least one armed security officer or personnel on campus at all times, raising questions about compliance in this instance.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with CCSO looking into the motive behind the shooting. Preliminary findings suggest that the student had been facing significant academic struggles, reportedly failing several classes, which may have contributed to the tragic outcome.

Despite the Texas Attorney General’s position that privacy rights do not extend beyond death, agencies have opted not to disclose the shooter’s identity. A representative from the Comal County Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 cited the Texas Family Code, which protects the confidentiality of juveniles involved in delinquent conduct, as the basis for this decision.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, questions surrounding mental health support for students and the effectiveness of security measures in schools are likely to arise. Stakeholders will need to address these issues to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
