Iran fires missiles at Israel and Gulf neighbors as Trump talks of winding down Mideast war

DUBAI – In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iran launched missile attacks aimed at Israel and Gulf Arab states shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the nation regarding the ongoing conflict. This military response underscores Tehran’s firm stance against U.S. calls for a ceasefire while maintaining its strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global oil and gas supplies.

In response to the crisis, Britain organized a conference on Thursday involving nearly 35 nations to discuss strategies for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas is transported. All G7 nations except the U.S., alongside key Gulf states like the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, signed a declaration last month demanding that Iran cease its obstruction of maritime traffic in this crucial waterway.

Trump’s recent remarks emphasized that it is not solely the U.S.’s responsibility to ensure the free passage of ships through Hormuz, urging other nations that depend on this route to act decisively. He warned Iran of severe consequences, stating that the U.S. would respond “extremely hard” in the coming weeks, while claiming that American strategic objectives in the region are “nearing completion.”

Iran’s military has responded defiantly, asserting that its weaponry is well-hidden and impervious to Israeli or American strikes. Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaghari commented, “The centers you think you have targeted are insignificant,” signaling Tehran’s confidence in its defensive capabilities.

As tensions escalated, explosions were reported in Dubai during Trump’s address, with air defenses engaging incoming missiles. Shortly thereafter, Israel announced its military was actively intercepting missiles aimed at its territory. Sirens sounded across Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, highlighting the widespread concern over regional security.

The conference, held in light of a joint statement condemning Iranian aggression against commercial vessels, aimed to explore diplomatic and political measures to secure the Strait of Hormuz. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper hosted the discussion, emphasizing the need to restore freedom of navigation and the safety of seafarers in the region.

Despite the strait’s importance to global energy supplies, only Japan and South Korea from the Asian region participated in the talks. Analysts from the Soufan Center noted that Trump’s messaging indicated a shift in U.S. policy, suggesting that nations reliant on oil exports must either collaborate with the U.S. or independently secure their interests in the Gulf.

No nation appears willing to engage militarily to reopen the strait amidst the ongoing conflict. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked on the need for viable diplomatic solutions to guarantee the safe passage of vital commodities.

Oil prices have surged in response to the conflict, with Brent crude rising to $108 per barrel, reflecting concerns over supply disruptions. This spike in energy costs is exerting pressure on Trump’s administration as it navigates the complexities of the conflict while attempting to reassure American citizens of progress.

The human toll of the conflict continues to climb, with reports indicating over 1,900 fatalities in Iran, alongside casualties in Israel, Gulf states, and Lebanon. The ongoing violence has displaced more than a million individuals and raised urgent concerns about humanitarian crises in the region.

As the situation develops, the international community remains watchful, seeking pathways to de-escalation while grappling with the realities of regional power dynamics and the pressing need for a sustainable resolution.
