SAN ANTONIO – Erik Cantu, a 21-year-old, has made headlines recently due to his ongoing legal troubles. He has been arrested six times since he survived being shot by a police officer in 2022. Cantu was supposed to appear in court earlier this month, but his hearing has been postponed to Monday.

The upcoming court session will take place in Bexar County’s 187th Criminal District Court before Judge Stephanie Boyd. This hearing is particularly significant as it involves a contested motion to revoke his probation.

Originally scheduled for March 2, the hearing faced delays due to discovery issues related to the witness’ attorney. According to court records, it was pushed back again because Judge Boyd was temporarily unavailable during the week of March 26. This hearing has been rescheduled multiple times; it was initially set for late January.

Cantu is currently facing accusations of stealing a tablet from his former girlfriend, Emily Proulx, who is also the mother of his child. Interestingly, Proulx has since requested the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office to drop the burglary charge against him.

His most recent arrest occurred in early December, adding to a series of legal issues that followed the traumatic incident in 2022 when he was shot multiple times by former San Antonio police officer James Brennand in a McDonald’s parking lot.

This burglary allegation surfaced less than a month after Cantu was sentenced to eight years of probation for violating conditions from two earlier evading arrest cases. Following this latest incident, prosecutors moved to revoke his probation, heightening the stakes for Cantu in the upcoming hearing.

In a related case, Brennand, the officer involved in the shooting, is facing charges of aggravated assault by a public servant and is expected to appear in court again in mid-April.
