MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In a commanding performance, Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a decisive 123-98 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. The young phenom showcased his skills with a stat line of 19 points, 15 rebounds, and an impressive seven blocks, highlighting his defensive prowess and ability to dominate the paint.
Joining Wembanyama in the scoring column, Devin Vassell also contributed 19 points, while teammates Stephon Castle and Keldon Johnson added 15 points each. The Spurs displayed a well-rounded offensive effort, with seven players finishing in double figures, underscoring their depth and teamwork.
This victory marked the Spurs’ seventh consecutive win, propelling them closer to the top of the Western Conference standings. Currently, San Antonio sits just two games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, who saw their own 12-game winning streak halted by the Boston Celtics in a 119-109 game on the same night.
For the Grizzlies, GG Jackson led the team with 20 points, while Olivier-Maxence Prosper and DeJon Jarreau chipped in 17 and 15 points, respectively. Unfortunately for Memphis, this loss marks their fourth straight, further complicating their season as they aim to regroup and look ahead to next year.
From the very first play of the game, which featured a lob pass to Wembanyama, the Spurs established their dominance. They quickly built a substantial 22-4 lead and maintained a comfortable 57-44 margin by halftime. The Spurs’ strategy of utilizing Wembanyama’s remarkable height paid off, allowing them to extend their lead to 20 points or more in the third quarter. A three-pointer from Wembanyama at the end of the third period capped the quarter with a score of 98-64 in favor of San Antonio.
As the Spurs focus on securing a strong playoff position, the Grizzlies are left grappling with the challenges of a difficult season. Injuries have significantly impacted Memphis, with ten players sidelined for the game against the Spurs. Notably, key contributors such as Ja Morant, Zach Edey, and Brandon Clarke are out for the remainder of the season due to various medical procedures.
In terms of gameplay statistics, the Spurs outscored the Grizzlies in the paint 56-34 and dominated on the boards with a 59-33 rebounding advantage, illustrating their control throughout the matchup.
