NEW YORK – A serious incident occurred at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada plane crashed into a fire truck on Sunday, causing injuries and unfortunately resulting in the deaths of two pilots. As of Wednesday, the airline has reported that most of the 40 passengers treated in local hospitals for various injuries have been released, with only four remaining hospitalized.

The plane, which was coming from Montreal, was carrying a total of 76 individuals, including crew members. The accident happened when the fire truck unexpectedly entered the runway just moments before the plane touched down, despite being cleared by an air traffic controller to cross. This unfortunate timing led to a collision that has raised questions about safety protocols at one of the busiest airports in the United States.

Since the incident, debris from the wreckage has blocked access to one of the airport’s two runways. On Wednesday afternoon, workers began the process of removing the mangled remains of the aircraft, which had been stranded on the tarmac. These efforts included righting the overturned fire truck and towing the damaged plane to a hangar for further assessment. Crews worked diligently to cut away portions of the aircraft, especially the nose that was severely damaged during the crash.

In a statement, Air Canada confirmed that they are working to reunite passengers with their baggage and personal belongings. Despite the chaos from the crash, many onboard were able to escape the damaged aircraft, including a flight attendant who was ejected from her seat but miraculously survived.

The pilots, identified as Mackenzie Gunther and Antoine Forest, have been praised for their quick thinking during the emergency. One passenger, Clément Lelièvre, credited their “incredible reflexes” for helping to save lives by managing to brake hard just before landing. Fortunately, the two firefighters in the truck survived the collision.

As the investigation continues, authorities will be looking into the circumstances that led to this tragic accident. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures in aviation, and the need for constant vigilance in maintaining those protocols.
