Visitors planning to visit Chisos Basin at Big Bend National Park should prepare for a significant two-year closure starting May 1, 2026, as part of essential infrastructure improvements funded by the Great American Outdoors Act. This closure will affect a variety of facilities, including the Chisos Basin Lodge, campground, and several trails.

Why is Chisos Basin Closing for Two Years?

The closure is primarily due to two major construction projects aimed at enhancing the Chisos Basin area. The first project involves the replacement of the Chisos Mountains Lodge, originally built in 1964. Over the decades, the structure has suffered extensive damage due to foundation movement caused by unstable clay soils, rendering ongoing repairs impractical.

To address these issues, park planners have determined that constructing a new lodge on the same footprint will provide a long-term solution that accommodates modern visitation and improves operational efficiency. Concurrently, the aging water infrastructure that serves the basin will be replaced, including a vital three-mile pipeline that delivers water from Oak Spring, many of which date back to the 1950s.

Due to the unique geography of the basin, which is accessed by a single road, the ongoing construction will necessitate the temporary closure of nearby lodging, the campground, and surrounding trailheads.

Amenities Impacted by the Big Bend Chisos Basin Closure

If construction proceeds as planned, the Chisos Basin area of Big Bend National Park will be closed to visitors for the duration of the projects. This closure will significantly impact the amenities that visitors have grown accustomed to:

For those wishing to experience the historic lodge before it closes, there are limited dates available in April 2026, so early booking is highly recommended. Additionally, the last day for the Chisos Basin Campground will be April 30, 2026.

Trails Impacted by the Big Bend Chisos Basin Closure

During the two-year closure, several trails within the Chisos Basin will also be affected. However, visitors can still access some of the High Chisos Trails, including the Juniper Canyon Trail (13 miles) and the Blue Creek Trail (5.5 miles). The Outer Mountain Loop, which stretches for 30 miles, will remain open for backpackers.

What is Open During the Chisos Basin Closure?

While the Chisos Basin is a highlight of Big Bend National Park, the park itself will remain open throughout the construction period. This allows visitors to explore other areas and trails, especially if they have already experienced the Window View and the Chisos Basin.

According to the National Park Service, “Big Bend National Park remains open throughout this project. Only the Chisos Basin area of the park will be affected. Over 800,000 acres and hundreds of miles of scenic drives (paved/unpaved), developed and primitive campsites, river access, and over 150 miles of hiking trails will remain open for visitors from around the world to enjoy.”

Recent updates also clarify that plans for a border wall extending over 100 miles into the park have been revised to focus on technological solutions rather than a physical barrier, ensuring the preservation of the park’s natural beauty.
