SAN ANTONIO – In an electrifying finish to an intense game, Victor Wembanyama delivered a clutch performance, hitting a 17-foot pull-up jumper with just one second left on the clock. This decisive shot led the San Antonio Spurs to a narrow 101-100 victory over the Phoenix Suns, marking the end of a six-season playoff drought for the Spurs.
Wembanyama’s standout performance included a remarkable 34 points and 12 rebounds, showcasing his impact on both ends of the court. His winning shot capped a thrilling final-minute comeback, securing the Spurs a top-six finish in the competitive Western Conference.
De’Aaron Fox also contributed significantly, adding 23 points to the scoreboard, while Julian Champagnie chipped in 14 points. This win represents the Spurs’ fourth consecutive victory, solidifying their place in the playoff race.
On the opposing side, the Suns were led by Collin Gillespie, who scored 24 points, and Devin Booker, who added 22. Despite their efforts, the Suns remain in seventh place in the Western Conference.
As the game progressed, Fox’s finger-roll layup brought San Antonio within one point, cutting Phoenix’s lead to 100-99 with just under 30 seconds remaining. The tension escalated when Suns coach Jordan Ott had to call a timeout, as Fox and Dylan Harper effectively trapped Booker near the sideline. Following the timeout, San Antonio fouled Rasheer Fleming, who unfortunately missed both free throws, leaving the door open for the Spurs.
With the clock winding down, Wembanyama expertly managed the time, dribbling down before pulling up for the game-winning jumper over Oso Ighodaro. This moment not only highlighted Wembanyama’s scoring ability but also his poise under pressure, a crucial trait for any aspiring star in the league.
In the lead-up to the game, the Spurs faced a setback with the late exclusion of guard Stephon Castle due to tightness in his right hip. His absence was felt on defense, as the Suns’ backcourt duo of Booker and Gillespie combined for a solid shooting performance, hitting 15 of their 34 attempts.
Gillespie had a hot start, making 5 of 7 from beyond the arc, helping the Suns build an early 39-28 lead. However, the Spurs responded effectively, opening the third quarter with a 19-11 run that gave them a brief 71-70 lead, their first since the first quarter.
Despite San Antonio’s efforts, Booker answered back with a seven-point surge, reclaiming the lead for the Suns. He finished the third quarter with 14 points, demonstrating his scoring prowess.
As the Suns wrapped up their second six-game road trip of the season with a 2-4 record, they will look to regroup. Their next matchup is against the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the Spurs will prepare to host the Indiana Pacers on the same night, aiming to extend their winning streak and solidify their playoff position.
