BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In a thrilling display of determination and skill, the UTSA women’s basketball team achieved a remarkable upset in the American Athletic Conference quarterfinals. The sixth-seeded Roadrunners triumphed over the third-seeded South Florida Bulls with a final score of 62-51 at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham on Thursday.

This victory was particularly significant, as the Roadrunners (16-15) had previously been swept by the Bulls (20-12) during the regular season. The team’s performance in this knockout stage showcased their resilience and ability to adapt under pressure.

Throughout the match, UTSA demonstrated a well-rounded effort, particularly in the final quarter, where they outscored South Florida 18-15. This late surge allowed them to pull ahead after what had been a closely contested battle for the first three quarters. The players executed their game plan effectively, highlighting their growth as a team.

A standout performer for UTSA was Mia Hammonds, a guard and alumnus of Steele High School. Hammonds’ contribution was pivotal; she recorded eight points, four rebounds, two steals, and a crucial block that solidified the Roadrunners’ lead in the closing minutes of the game. Her defensive prowess and ability to perform under pressure were key factors in the team’s success.

With this victory, UTSA has advanced to the semifinals, where they will face the second-seeded East Carolina. The game is set to take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, promising to be another exciting chapter in the Roadrunners’ tournament journey. Fans and analysts alike will be eagerly watching to see if UTSA can continue their impressive run in the tournament.
