SAN ANTONIO – A cold war is brewing over the “Iceman” trademark in the sports world.

Former San Antonio Spur George Gervin recently filed applications to trademark the iconic nickname “Iceman.” This move comes shortly after Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams submitted similar applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, igniting a dispute that could have significant implications for both athletes.

Gervin expressed his surprise to ESPN, stating he was “caught off guard” upon learning about Williams’ attempts to trademark the name on March 16. “I’ve been the Iceman for 40-something years,” Gervin said. “I never thought anybody would try to trademark it. He kind of knocked me out the box.”

Williams’ applications aim to secure the trademark for a wide array of athletic products, including sporting goods, apparel such as T-shirts and sweatshirts, and even digital items like trading cards and downloadable posters. This broad scope suggests Williams is looking to make a substantial impact with the nickname, which has been synonymous with Gervin since the late 1970s.

In response, Gervin filed his own trademark applications on March 20, asserting his longstanding use of the nickname since 1980. His claim is bolstered by the significant cultural and historical cachet the name carries, especially within the realm of basketball.

The San Antonio Spurs organization has rallied behind Gervin, showcasing their support on social media. They posted a striking image of Gervin sitting on a throne of ice, accompanied by the caption, “there’s only one Iceman.” This display of solidarity not only emphasizes Gervin’s legacy but also highlights the importance of protecting one’s brand identity in the competitive sports landscape.

As this trademark battle unfolds, it raises broader questions about the ownership of nicknames and their implications in sports. The resolution of this dispute will likely set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, potentially impacting athletes and their brands for years to come.
