SAN ANTONIO – In a recent special report titled “Dangerous Lessons,” KSAT Investigates shines a light on a serious and growing issue in schools: violence against educators. This documentary takes viewers inside the classrooms where teachers and staff are facing alarming levels of aggression from students.

One particularly tragic story shared in the special is that of Alfred Jimenez, affectionately known as “Mr. Fred” by students and staff at the Northside Independent School District. Jimenez’s life was cut short in 2024 after he sustained a fatal injury when a student with intellectual disabilities pushed him. This incident has sparked outrage and led to urgent questions about the safety of educators within the classroom.

The report, produced by KSAT Investigates reporter Daniela Ibarra and photojournalist Eddie Latigo, is a culmination of nearly two years of research on the injuries that educators face and the overall safety conditions in classrooms. It features testimonies from teachers and staff who have experienced physical violence, including being punched, bitten, or scratched while simply trying to teach.

According to data reviewed by KSAT Investigates, there have been nearly 8,000 reported injuries among educators in San Antonio school districts over the last three school years. This staggering number averages out to about 15 reported injuries each school day, emphasizing the urgent need for change in how schools protect their staff.

The special also digs deeper into the personal experiences of educators. For example, a veteran special education teacher has decided to retire after enduring numerous injuries at the hands of students this past school year. Beyond the physical harm, the investigation highlights how such violence can disrupt the learning environment and impact other students who witness these incidents.

The scope of violence against educators is not just a local issue; the special discusses how other parts of the United States are addressing educator safety. Texas lawmakers are currently facing pressure to consider possible policy changes, while a federal grant aims to support initiatives that enhance safety measures in schools.

How You Can Participate

KSAT Investigates is calling on individuals who have experienced violence in the classroom to share their stories. By doing so, they aim to bring more awareness to this critical issue and advocate for necessary changes within the educational system.
