BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Recent studies have highlighted a significant link between gun ownership and domestic violence fatalities, prompting lawmakers to take action on this pressing issue.

In a recent Democratic primary held on March 3, an impressive 97% of voters expressed support for “red flag” laws. These laws are designed to prevent individuals with a history of domestic violence from acquiring firearms, aiming to enhance safety for potential victims.

Kendall Scudder, chair of the Texas Democratic Party, emphasized the importance of this unity, stating, “What I hope that it sends is a really loud, resounding message that we as a party are strongly unified on this. It’s hard to get 97% of anybody to do anything.”

Tragically, the impact of domestic violence is stark. According to the Texas Council on Family Violence, 161 individuals were murdered by their partners during the fiscal year 2024, with nearly 60% of these homicides involving firearms.

In a recent incident, a woman named Jennifer Rodriguez lost her life in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide, further underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue.

Currently, existing state and federal laws prohibit individuals convicted of family violence misdemeanors or those subject to protective orders from possessing firearms. However, Texas law permits these individuals to regain firearm access five years after completing their sentence.

Advocates for victims have called for the removal of this law and for stronger enforcement of the regulations that are already in place. The Texas Council on Family Violence has noted that fewer than 10 of Texas’ 254 counties have effective protocols to enforce these existing laws. “Every year, we see cases where a victim is killed by an offender who was not legally allowed to own a firearm due to a prior conviction or protective order,” they stated.

In response to this crisis, Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans have established the Family Violence Criminal Homicide Prevention Task Force, which is the first of its kind in the state. This 21-member panel has been tasked with formulating recommendations to prevent domestic violence-related deaths.

Gloria Aguilar Terry, CEO of the Texas Council on Family Violence and a member of the task force, stated that the focus will be on examining the three most critical factors contributing to lethality in domestic violence situations: stalking, strangulation, and firearms. She aims to provide actionable recommendations for legislators to consider.

In conclusion, as awareness grows regarding the connection between firearms and domestic violence, there is a collective call for legislative action. The hope is that both state and federal lawmakers will take the necessary steps to protect vulnerable individuals and reduce the tragic loss of life.
