SAN ANTONIO – A man was shot and killed by a San Antonio police officer after pulling a gun, while another man shot himself following a chase on the far West Side, according to Chief Jesse Salame.
The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. Friday at Lone Star Parkway and Wild Pine, not far from Alamo Ranch Parkway. This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns surrounding gun violence and police encounters in urban areas.
According to Chief Salame, the police chase began when officers from the Street Crimes Unit initiated pursuit on the South Side of San Antonio. The chase continued to the Alamo Ranch area, culminating when the suspect’s vehicle stopped near a gated neighborhood at Lone Star Parkway and Wild Pine.
The male driver attempted to enter the gated community but was unsuccessful. The male passenger then exited the vehicle and attempted to input a code into the gate’s keypad, a critical moment that escalated the situation.
An officer approached the passenger after police, aided by an Eagle helicopter, located the vehicle. In a rapid turn of events, the passenger produced a firearm, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene, a somber reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement.
Simultaneously, the driver produced a gun and, in a shocking act, intentionally shot himself. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital in critical condition, highlighting the severe mental health crises that can accompany such violent encounters.
An adult woman was also present in the back seat of the vehicle but fortunately sustained no injuries. She was taken to police headquarters for questioning by detectives as part of the ongoing investigation.
In response to the incident, San Antonio police, fire, and EMS crews were promptly dispatched to the scene to provide assistance and secure the area.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to provide further updates. This incident underscores the critical importance of mental health resources and the need for effective crisis intervention strategies to prevent such tragedies.
