SAN ANTONIO – In a remarkable showcase of skill and athleticism, Victor Wembanyama delivered a standout performance, achieving career highs of 52 points and 24 rebounds along with eight blocks. His efforts propelled the San Antonio Spurs to a narrow 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning NBA career.
Wembanyama’s dominance was evident from the beginning, as he scored an impressive 29 points, collected 15 rebounds, and recorded five blocks in the first half alone. This performance made him the first player since the NBA’s play-by-play era began in 1996-1997 to achieve at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in a single half—a testament to his unique skill set and potential.
Despite Wembanyama’s historic night, the Mavericks fought hard, led by Kyrie Irving who contributed 29 points. Irving had a chance to clinch the game late but missed a contested 15-foot, turnaround jumper with just three seconds left on the clock, allowing the Spurs to escape with the win.
Supporting Wembanyama, Dylan Harper added 21 points, while Stephon Castle recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, helping the Spurs secure their sixth consecutive win. On the other side, the Mavericks saw notable performances from Naji Marshall with 22 points, P.J. Washington with 21 points, and Cooper Flagg who contributed 19 points.
Throughout the game, Wembanyama showcased his versatility and resilience. He had two critical putbacks in the final 2:39 minutes, although he struggled with free throws, going 1 for 4 in the last two minutes. Notably, the Spurs were a plus-23 when Wembanyama was on the court, highlighting his impact on the game.
Wembanyama’s explosive start was marked by scoring 10 of San Antonio’s first 12 points, showcasing his ability to dominate early. He finished the first quarter with 15 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and an assist, setting a strong tone for the Spurs.
The Mavericks seized the opportunity when Wembanyama exited the game three minutes into the second quarter, launching a 12-1 run that brought them within one point at 49-48. However, Wembanyama’s return to the floor quickly shifted the momentum back in favor of the Spurs.
In a stunning display of defensive prowess, Wembanyama recorded three blocks in just 13 seconds on a single possession, thwarting attempts by Flagg and Washington before a third block was captured by De’Aaron Fox, underscoring his defensive capabilities.
