The upcoming election for Bexar County Judge is heating up as Ron Nirenberg, the former San Antonio mayor, faces off against Patrick Von Dohlen, the sole Republican candidate. This race is pivotal as it reflects the political landscape of Bexar County and sets the stage for future governance.
Nirenberg, who recently triumphed over sitting Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai in the Democratic primary, is now vying for a new role after being term-limited in city government by 2025. He emphasized the importance of strong local leadership in navigating the complex political environment both at the state and federal levels. “There is no substitute for strong local leadership,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to addressing the needs of Bexar County.
On the other hand, Patrick Von Dohlen, a financial advisor and conservative activist, has positioned himself as a challenger to Nirenberg. Despite previous unsuccessful runs for the San Antonio City Council, he cites Nirenberg’s policies as a central motivator for his candidacy. “Because of what he has done in the City of San Antonio, somebody had to stop him,” Von Dohlen remarked, asserting his readiness to tackle the issues he believes have plagued the county.
Von Dohlen criticizes Nirenberg’s administration for increasing the city’s budget and debt, asserting that higher utility rates and recent tax increases are direct consequences of his policies. In response, Nirenberg refuted these claims, arguing that they are unfounded and that Von Dohlen’s repeated electoral defeats are a testament to his lack of credibility. “The reason Patrick has been rejected by voters every time he’s appeared on a ballot is because he can’t tell the truth, and people see right through it,” Nirenberg said.
Bexar County is currently grappling with budgetary challenges. Although it did not raise taxes like the City of San Antonio, it has had to utilize its reserves to manage its latest spending plan. Von Dohlen emphasizes a return to basics, focusing on efficiently funding core services, emergency services, and addressing the ongoing jail crisis.
In contrast, Nirenberg advocates for addressing redundancies in services between the county and the city, particularly in areas such as animal care and public health. As the election date approaches on November 3, the outcomes of this race will potentially reshape the political dynamics in Bexar County.
