SAN ANTONIO – In a commanding performance, the San Antonio Spurs secured their fifth consecutive victory, defeating the Utah Jazz with a score of 119-97 on Monday night. Dylan Harper led the charge with 17 points, showcasing his scoring ability and contributing significantly to the team’s overall success.
Victor Wembanyama, the highly-touted rookie, added a double-double to his impressive resume, finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. His presence on both ends of the court continues to be a game-changer for San Antonio. Alongside him, Stephon Castle contributed 16 points, while Keldon Johnson chipped in with 15 points, highlighting the Spurs’ balanced offensive attack.
Utah’s Lauri Markkanen was the standout for the Jazz, scoring 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds, but it was not enough to end their five-game losing streak. The Spurs demonstrated their defensive prowess by holding their opponent to under 100 points for the first time this season.
During this five-game winning streak, Wembanyama has averaged an impressive 28.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game, but against the Jazz, the Spurs showcased the strength of their roster with seven players scoring in double figures. The team shot a remarkable 60% from the field and dominated the third quarter, outscoring Utah 35-20. This quarter was particularly pivotal, with Wembanyama, Harper, Castle, and De’Aaron Fox each contributing six points.
Fox, who finished with 12 points, along with Devin Vassell, who scored 11, helped the Spurs’ starters combine for an impressive total of 68 points. San Antonio’s defense was also noteworthy; they initiated an 18-2 run after an early jumper by Markkanen, showcasing their ability to seize momentum.
The Jazz struggled offensively, scoring just 16 points in the first quarter—a season-low for them—and while they attempted to close the gap by making 5 of 11 three-pointers in the second quarter, they could not reclaim the lead. The Spurs outpaced Utah with a decisive 26-9 advantage in fastbreak points and a 52-36 lead in points scored in the paint.
Looking Ahead
The Jazz will look to turn their fortunes around as they head to New Orleans on Wednesday night, while the Spurs will host the Dallas Mavericks on the same night, eager to extend their winning streak.
