SAN ANTONIO – Texas horned lizards, often affectionately referred to as “horny toads,” are making a significant comeback thanks to collaborative conservation efforts. On October 26, 2023, the San Antonio Zoo and Zoo Miami successfully released 55 of these unique reptiles into a Texas ranch, marking a crucial step in the ongoing Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project.

This project aims to restore the populations of Texas horned lizards in areas where they have seen a concerning decline. Initiatives like this are vital as they not only help re-establish ecological balance but also raise awareness about the threats facing native wildlife.

Of the 55 lizards released, 25 were transferred from Zoo Miami, two were bred and raised at the San Antonio Zoo, and the remaining 28 were rescued from a Texas ranch earlier this year. Such diverse origins highlight the collaborative efforts across institutions dedicated to the survival of this species.

The Texas horned lizard, known for its distinctive appearance and unique behaviors, has been facing habitat loss and declining populations due to various environmental pressures, including urban development and predation. The reintroduction project not only focuses on increasing their numbers but also on educating the public about the ecological significance of this species.

As these lizards return to their native habitat, the hope is to establish a self-sustaining population that can thrive in the wild. Conservationists and researchers are optimistic that with continued support and awareness, the Texas horned lizard can once again flourish across its historical range.
