SALT LAKE CITY – Victor Wembanyama showcased his immense talent with a stellar performance, scoring 36 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. His efforts propelled the San Antonio Spurs to a thrilling 117-111 overtime victory against the short-handed Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
Devin Vassell emerged as a crucial second scoring option for the Spurs, contributing 21 points, with 17 of those coming after halftime. His timely scoring was vital as the Spurs struggled early on, trailing by as many as 11 points against a determined Utah team.
The Jazz, despite their shortcomings, saw a standout performance from rookie Keyonte George, who recorded a season-high 31 points. However, he seemed fatigued at the end of regulation and during overtime, indicating the toll of carrying the team’s offensive load. Ace Bailey and rookie Darryn Peterson also made contributions with 19 and 18 points, respectively, though Peterson did not see action in the critical final moments.
Overtime opened with a three-pointer from Brice Sensabaugh, who finished with 16 points, but the Spurs quickly answered with a 12-0 run that effectively sealed the game. San Antonio’s defense played a pivotal role in this victory, disrupting Utah’s offensive rhythm and forcing the Jazz into difficult shots during the extra period. The Spurs capitalized on their defensive intensity, causing four turnovers and limiting Utah to just 2-for-7 shooting in overtime.
The game was tightly contested, and with the Jazz trailing 105-100, back-to-back baskets from Sensabaugh and George sent the game into overtime. The Spurs struggled in the final moments of regulation, missing their last four field goal attempts, including a buzzer-beater from De’Aaron Fox.
The Jazz were significantly impacted by injuries, missing three key starters: Jaren Jackson (torn MCL), Lauri Markkanen (right wrist sprain), and Jusuf Nurkic (foot injury). In contrast, the Spurs have navigated the season with a relatively healthy roster, with only Tobias Harris sidelined due to a calf strain.
Wembanyama’s first-half performance was critical, as he scored 21 points to keep the Spurs competitive, although they entered halftime trailing 55-51. His ability to perform under pressure continues to position him as one of the league’s most promising young talents.
Looking ahead, the Spurs will host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, while the Jazz will face the Portland Trail Blazers in their next outing.
