AMMAN – In a tragic incident that has shocked the nation, Jordanian security forces arrested three men on Monday in connection with an attack on a Greek Orthodox Church. The assault, which occurred during a funeral service, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and left more than two dozen others injured.
The Public Security Directorate reported that the suspects were apprehended following a dawn shootout in Karak, located south of the capital, Amman. Remarkably, all three suspects sustained injuries during the confrontation, while no security personnel were harmed in the operation. Karak is known for its diverse population, including a minority Christian community.
The attack unfolded on Friday when three assailants launched their assault during a solemn gathering. As of now, there has been no claim of responsibility, and no specific armed group has been identified as being behind the attack.
Jordan’s Interior Minister, Mazen Al-Faraya, confirmed the identities of the three suspects, stating, “The security services have fulfilled their duties, resulting in the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act.” He noted that the suspects offered fierce resistance but were ultimately subdued and taken into custody, suffering serious injuries in the process.
Minister Al-Faraya emphasized that the security forces acted swiftly, identifying the individuals shortly after the attack and employing all necessary resources to apprehend them. His comments reflect the state’s commitment to maintaining security and stability in the region.
In response to the incident, King Abdullah II has called for a severe crackdown on those he described as “outlaws of Islam,” urging authorities to take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt the unity of the Jordanian people. The King’s remarks underscore the prevailing tensions and the need for a united front in the face of such violent extremism.
