More flooding in Four Corners region after storms bring heavy rain and at least one tornado

Recently, the Southwest U.S., particularly New Mexico, faced severe flooding due to heavy rain and storms. This led to evacuations and significant damage in several neighborhoods, with emergency crews working tirelessly to assess the situation. Floodwaters receded, revealing hazards like downed power lines and debris, but the danger was far from over.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for much of the Four Corners region, which includes parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. This area has been drenched with rain since Wednesday, resulting in swollen rivers and flooded homes. Meteorologist Kris Sanders highlighted that the saturated soils mean even a small amount of additional rainfall could lead to overflowing creeks and streams.

Adding to the chaos, a tornado touched down in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Saturday evening. Meteorologist Scott Overpeck from the Albuquerque weather service confirmed this and mentioned that they were investigating reports of potential tornadoes in other areas of the state. While no damage estimates were available immediately, the sight of the tornado shocked local residents.

Michelle Vialpando, a lifelong Santa Fe resident, described her amazement when she spotted the tornado from her patio. “I was literally in shock. I’ve never seen anything like that before,” she shared on social media.

In the Farmington area, local officials reported that although rivers were beginning to recede, many residents remained evacuated, and hundreds were without power. San Juan County officials were still assessing the overall damage and the number of people displaced but confirmed that, thankfully, there were no reports of fatalities.

County Sheriff Shane Ferrari described his home being flooded with about 4 feet of water. He mentioned that while the situation was stabilizing, cleaning up would take time. Officials warned that floodwaters could be contaminated with chemicals and sewage, posing health risks to returning residents.

As the community navigated through the disaster, Undersheriff Cory Tanner explained that officials were conducting house-to-house checks for safety hazards, a process expected to take several days. Residents like Zach and Abigail Flatt, who faced evacuation from their home near the San Juan River, watched helplessly as floodwaters destroyed their property and swept away their chickens.

In addition to the damage in New Mexico, authorities are also assessing the impact of flooding in the Navajo Nation and Colorado. In Colorado’s Archuleta County, officials are conducting welfare checks and aerial scans to evaluate the devastation. Sheriff Mike Le Roux described the situation as catastrophic, although there have been no reports of injuries or deaths as of yet.

The flooding in this region is part of a larger pattern caused by two months of heavy rain, influenced by tropical moisture from the Pacific. After enduring a long drought, areas like the Grand Canyon and parts of New Mexico have recently faced deadly flooding.

Forecasters attribute this latest surge in rainfall to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which causes temporary warming in parts of the Pacific. The situation remains fluid, with continued monitoring and responses from local authorities.

As communities begin to recover, the focus is on safety, cleanup, and ensuring that residents can return to their homes without risk. Emergency responders and local officials continue to work diligently to assess damage and provide support.

Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops. For more information, follow the National Weather Service and local news outlets.
