ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas – A mother has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the tragic death of her 12-year-old daughter, Miranda Sipps. Denise Balbaneda, aged 38, was convicted of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission, according to the Atascosa County District Clerk’s Office.

This case has drawn significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding Miranda’s death. Balbaneda and her husband, Gerald Gonzales, who is set to be sentenced in November, were indicted in August 2024 after an investigation revealed serious neglect.

Miranda was discovered unconscious on August 8, suffering from life-threatening injuries. An autopsy revealed she had experienced trauma to her neck, prompting further investigation by local authorities. According to Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward, the parents failed to seek timely medical assistance, which ultimately contributed to Miranda’s tragic fate.

Four days after her injuries were discovered, Balbaneda called 911, reporting that Miranda was not breathing. Instead of immediately seeking help, she attempted to drive her daughter to a hospital, but was directed by dispatchers to meet emergency medical services on the highway. Unfortunately, even after reaching Methodist Hospital Atascosa, medical staff were unable to save her, and Miranda was pronounced dead that evening.

Following Miranda’s death, both Balbaneda and Gonzales were arrested and charged. The investigation revealed that they had knowingly caused serious injuries and had neglected to provide necessary medical care. Sheriff Soward emphasized that the living conditions for Miranda were unacceptable, stating that she was kept on a makeshift bedding area in a dirty environment. The couple attempted to care for her with smoothies and supplements but failed to provide appropriate medical attention when it was critically needed.

Soward noted, “Someone who is unconscious is not able to swallow. She’d been in that situation, laying on the floor for four days.” This heartbreaking case highlights the severe consequences of neglect and the importance of responsible parenting.

Miranda was a student at Jourdanton Independent School District and was just weeks away from her 13th birthday at the time of her death. The incident has prompted discussions about child welfare and the responsibilities of parents in ensuring their children’s health and safety.

For those who suspect child neglect or abuse, it is crucial to report concerns to local authorities or child protective services. Community awareness and timely intervention can make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable children.
