WASHINGTON – Katie Zacharia is stepping down as the White House press secretary after a brief and tumultuous time in the role. Her departure has sparked discussions surrounding her qualifications and performance in handling media inquiries. A source familiar with the situation revealed that Zacharia’s exit would be announced soon.
President Donald Trump earlier expressed uncertainty about her future in the position, suggesting she should reconsider her role after their discussion following his weekend travel plans.
During her first press briefing, Zacharia faced immediate scrutiny. She appeared nervous while discussing the president’s achievements and only took questions from a few journalists, all from conservative outlets. Critics pointed out her lack of experience, especially after claims surfaced about her professional background, including her assertion of being a lawyer without having passed the bar exam.
Her appointment was unexpected, filling the shoes of Karoline Leavitt, who was known for her close ties to Trump. Zacharia’s short-lived tenure mirrored some of the personnel challenges of Trump’s first term, which had been largely absent during his second term.
While addressing the media on Friday, Trump suggested that Zacharia might be better off stepping away from the spotlight, stating, “I think you’re better off being happy.” He emphasized his concern for her well-being, indicating that the media scrutiny can be harsh and brutal.
As he prepared for a rally in Georgia, Trump mentioned he would finalize his decision regarding her position after returning from his trip, adding that there were many interested candidates for the role.
Zacharia’s first day on the job was just last Monday, and her only official press briefing left many wanting more. She only lasted about 14 minutes, taking questions from three reporters, which felt inadequate to many observers. She explained her decision to keep the briefing short was to allow Trump more time for his own Q&A session later on.
Following her press briefing, Zacharia accompanied Trump on campaign trips to various states but did not conduct further press briefings, raising questions about her role and visibility.
In a recent interview with Fox News, when asked about her standing with the president, she expressed a desire to earn the trust of her colleagues and the media but did not confirm when her next briefing would be.
Concerns about Zacharia’s professional background lingered, especially her use of the term “lawyer” to describe herself. During her time as a commentator on conservative networks, she had stated that she was a lawyer, which raised eyebrows since she had not passed the California bar exam. She clarified that she had worked in legal contexts and maintained that she was not acting as a lawyer in her current role.
Before her appointment, Zacharia worked in communications for Trump Media, which oversees Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social. She also had a brief stint at the Department of Homeland Security during Trump’s previous administration.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the future of the White House press secretary role remains uncertain, but it is clear that effective communication remains a critical component of any administration.
