CHICAGO – Montez Sweat, the defensive end for the Chicago Bears, has been suspended for two games due to a violation of the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. The league announced the disciplinary action on Tuesday, leaving the Bears to navigate challenging matchups without one of their key defensive players.
The Bears are set to visit the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday and will host the New England Patriots on October 22. This suspension comes at a critical time as the Bears look to recover from a disappointing 31-7 defeat against the Green Bay Packers last week.
Sweat’s absence is particularly significant given his contribution to the team’s defense; he has recorded two of the Bears’ 12 sacks this season through the first five games. In response to his suspension, the Bears have activated fellow defensive lineman Shemar Turner from the physically unable to perform list. Turner, a second-round draft pick in 2022, has been recovering from a torn ACL and will now have an opportunity to step into a more prominent role.
The 6-foot-6 Sweat entered the NFL as a first-round selection by the Washington Football Team in 2019. After spending over four seasons with Washington, he was traded to the Bears on October 31, 2023. Since joining Chicago, Sweat has made an impressive impact, accumulating 23.5 sacks in just 47 games, including a standout performance last season where he recorded 10 sacks. Overall, he boasts 59 sacks in 114 NFL games, demonstrating his effectiveness as a pass-rusher throughout his career.
As the Bears face the fallout from this suspension, they will need to rally together to fill the void left by Sweat and improve their defensive performance. The upcoming games against Atlanta and New England will be crucial as Chicago aims to regain momentum in their season.
