SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a surprising turn of events, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been suspended for one game following a head-butt incident involving Seattle Seahawks player Ernest Jones IV. This altercation occurred after Greenlaw delivered a late hit on the sidelines during the teams’ intense matchup, which the 49ers won 32-29 on Sunday.

The NFL announced the suspension on Monday, describing Greenlaw’s actions as “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.” The decision comes as no shock given the league’s strict stance on player conduct and player safety.

As it stands, Greenlaw is set to miss the upcoming Monday night game against the Washington Commanders, pending the outcome of an appeal which he is scheduled to file on Tuesday. Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed disappointment over the league’s ruling, stating, “I was disappointed they decided to do that. But it is what it is. Hopefully, the appeal process can go better tomorrow and we can get it rescinded. But I’ll wait to see how that goes.”

Greenlaw’s track record raises concerns, as this isn’t his first encounter with disciplinary actions. He has previously faced ejections for two other infractions during his career. Notably, he was involved in a sideline altercation with Philadelphia’s head of security Dom DiSandro earlier this year and was disqualified for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in 2022.

In addition to his suspension last season for berating an official after a game against the New York Giants, Greenlaw received a fine of $11,941 for taunting the Broncos’ sideline just last week. His history suggests that this incident may be part of a larger pattern of behavior that the league is keen to address.

The head-butt incident unfolded during the second quarter of Sunday’s game, following a scramble by Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold. After Darnold was hit late by Greenlaw as he went out of bounds, several Seahawks defenders confronted Greenlaw, leading to his retaliatory head-butt to Jones, who was left bleeding after the altercation. Consequently, Greenlaw was ejected from the game.

Returning to San Francisco this season after a stint with the Denver Broncos, Greenlaw has recorded 37 tackles across five games. His performance has been crucial for the 49ers, but such disciplinary issues may raise questions about his reliability moving forward.
